Pick your teeth!

It's one of the greatest sins and yet it's something we do day after day. Sometimes we don't even realise it. You're just chatting away with your friends and you begin to talk about somebody else. Our whole lives are based around 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours', soaps based on lying, backbiting etc. But look at what the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said about it:

The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) was sitting with his companions one day and one of them was speaking badly about someone who wasn't there. As the man got up to leave the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said to him: 'Pick Your Teeth!' 'But I haven't eaten anything,' the man protested. 'No,' the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said 'You have eaten the flesh of your dead brother'.

As Allah tells us in the Qur'an: 'Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? No, you would hate it.' [surah al-Hujurat; 49:12]

But What If It's True?!

The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) told us:

'Backbiting is to say something about someone they wouldn't like said about them....If what bad you said about them is true, then you have backbited and if it is false then you have slandered them.'

[Muslim]

If you're still not convinced of how big a sin backbiting really is, then look at the punishment Allah has in store for the backbiters. The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) described:

'On the night of mirage I passed by some people who had metal hooks in their hands and were clawing at their faces and their necks with them. I asked Gabriel 'Who were these people?' He said 'These are the people who eat the flesh of human beings and disgrace them'

[Abu Dawud].

This is how big a sin backbiting is looked upon and yet we continue to backbite without a second thought. Next time you lie, talk about somebody, remember Allah (subhanahu wa Ta'ala) and the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) and put them in front of you before you speak.

Just having a Laugh!

May be we think it's all right to take the mick out of someone so long as we say it to their face. We'll make fun of the way someone talks, walks, or how they look. Allah Ta'ala warns us against such behaviour:

'O you who believe. Let not some men laugh at others, it may be the that they are better than you. Nor let some women laugh at others it may be that they are better than you. Nor abuse each other, nor be sarcastic to each other by using offensive nicknames...'

[surah al-Hujurat; 49:11]

Don't forget that Allah made us the way we are, so how can you even think of making fun of his creation?

Cool to Swear?

Listen to yourself and to your friends speaking one day - nearly every sentence will have a swear word in it, thinking it's cool and macho to swear, copying the idols of TV and the cinema. Is it really 'cool' to swear? The Hellfire is far from being cool. People will wish they were cool then rather than being cool in this world. Remember! That every time you speak, an angel writes down what you say, and that one day you will have to answer for every single word you ever uttered. So if you swear at someone then it's written down as a sin against you. You're only harming yourself. The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said that:

'Abusing a Muslim is a sin and fighting with him is disbelief.'

[Muslim].

'But sometimes you just have to swear'!

We've all been there - you're just so angry with somebody and the only way you can express yourself, is to swear at them. The solution? ...

Don't get angry in the first place.

A man came to the Prophet (S) one day and said 'Advise me'. The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said 'Don't become angry. Don't become angry. Don't become angry'.... 'When one of you gets angry while he is standing up, he should sit down. Then anger will leave him, and if not then he should lie down'

[Ahmad]

So let us follow this beautiful advice of the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) and remember that anger is from Shaytaan. If someone angers you or swears at you, then don't harm yourself by doing the same but respond in a better way as Allah says in the Qur'an:

'Repel evil with what is better. Then he who was your worst enemy will become your best friend.'

[surah 41:33]

'It wasn't me. Honest.'

How often do we say such a phrase or say that 'I was only joking'. We treat lies as being trivial. However we are told that:

'Allah's messenger did not hate anything more than lying'

[Ahmed].

The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) was once asked 'Can a Muslim be a coward?' He (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) replied 'Yes.' and then asked 'Can a Muslim be a miser?' and the reply was 'Yes.' The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) was then asked 'Can a Muslim be a liar?' The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) replied 'NO! A Muslim can never be a liar'. Furthermore, he said 'Truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to paradise...Lying leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to the hellfire.'

[sahih al-Bukhari].

As we know that one lie leads to another ten lies which lead to bad actions. Remember you can lie and think that you have got away with it but on the day of Judgement your hands, tongue and feet will bear testimony against you and tell the truth.

But it's only words!

One day one of the companions asked the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) 'O Messenger of Allah. Will we be called to account for what we say?' He replied 'May you be lost to your mother - people will be thrown, faces down into the hellfire, only on account to what their tongues said.'

[at-Tirmidhi].

Indeed the tongue controls the rest of your body. A well-controlled tongue will keep us within Islam but a loose tongue will destroy us. The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said:

'When a person gets up in the morning, all the parts of his body make a plea to his tongue saying; 'Fear Allah regarding us, because we follow you. If you are right then we shall also be right , and if you are wrong then we shall also be wrong.' [at-Tirmidhi]

Instead of swearing, lying and engaging in useless talk we can use our tongues in better ways and what better than telling people about Islam. Allah says:

'Who is better in speech than one who calls (men) to Allah and works righteousness and says I am one of those who bow down in Islam'

[surah 41:33]

Your tongue can save you as well!.Indeed if you control your tongue and speak good then paradise can be yours. The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said:

'Whoever can guarantee me two things I can guarantee them Paradise.' The companions asked 'What, O Messenger of Allah?' He replied 'What is between his jaws (his tongue) and his legs (private parts).'

[sahih al-Bukhari]

I've lied and backbited, sworn and made fun of others. I must be doomed I must be going to hell!'

NO! Allah tells us in the Qur'an:

'O my servants who have wronged themselves, never despair of the mercy of Allah for truly he forgives all sins. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'

[surah 39:53]

So if you really repent and turn back to Allah and promise not to commit the sin again then truly Allah's promise is true and He will forgive you. If you've backbitten someone - go and tell the person whom you backbited and apologise sincerely and ask them to forgive you. But if you think that the situation will get worse then turn back to Allah sincerely begging for his forgiveness then to make up for what you said, go around and talk good of him.

The Best Example

As we know that the best person to have ever lived is the Prophet Muhammad (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) and he is the best of example for mankind. If we follow him we can never go wrong. Ayesha (R) the Prophet's wife described the Prophet's conduct as follows:

'He was neither a obscene talker nor a user of bad words. He did not shout nor did he repay evil with evil. He used to forgive people and overlook their sins.'

[at-Tirmidhi]

Final Advice: A beautiful saying of the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) that will ensure the protection of our tongue. The Messenger of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) said:

'Whoever believes in Allah and the Last day, let him either speak good or keep silent'

Bukhari - Volume 8, Book 81, Number 772:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

A drunk was brought to the Prophet and he ordered him to be beaten (lashed). Some of us beat him with our hands, and some with their shoes, and some with their garments (twisted in the form of a lash). When that drunk had left, a man said, 'What is wrong with him? May Allah disgrace him!' Allah's Apostle said, 'Do not help Satan against your (Muslim) brother.'

Allah - the Most High - said:

'The Believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in the hearts, and when His Verses are recited to them, it increases their eemaan (faith), and they put their trust and rely upon Allah alone. They are those who perform the Prayer and spend out of that which We have given them, they are Believers in truth. For them are grades of dignity and nobility with their Lord, and also forgiveness and generous provisions.' [Soorah al-Anfaal 8:2-4]

A Role Model For Forever..

Remember! A Role Model For Forever…

When going through hardships,
Remember the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam) in Ta'if!

When being starved,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam) tying two stones to his stomach in the battle of Khandaq!

When becoming angry,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s control of anger on the martyrdom of his beloved Uncle Hamza!

When losing a tooth,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s tooth in the battle of Uhud!

When bleeding from any part of the body,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s body covered in blood on his return from Ta'if!

When feeling lonely,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s seclusion in Mount Hira!

When feeling tired in Salaat,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s blessed feet in Tahajjud!

When being prickled with thorns,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s pain from Abu Lahab's wife!

When being troubled by neighbors,
Remember the old woman who would empty rubbish on the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)!

When losing a child,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s son, Ibrahim!

When beginning a long journey,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s long journey to Madinah!

When going against a Sunnah,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s intercession, (Ummati, Ummati, Ummati) (My Ummah)!

When sacrificing an animal,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s sacrifice of 63 animals for his Ummah!

Before shaving your beard,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s face rejecting the two beardless!

When falling into an argument with your wife,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s encounter with Aisha and Hafsa (Radhiyallahu anhumaa)!

When experiencing less food in the house,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s days of poverty!

When experiencing poverty,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s advice to Ashaab-e-Suffa (People of Suffa)!

When losing a family member,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s departure from this world!

When becoming an orphan,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s age at six!

When sponsoring an orphan,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s sponsor for Zaid ibn Haritha (Radhiyallahu anhu)!

When fearing an enemy,
Remember the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)'s saying to Abu Bakr in Mount Thour!

Whatever situation you may find yourself in,
Remember your role model, the best of creation: Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa alaihi wassallam)!

Music - Food for your soul or Fire for your body !?

Dream - An analogy to this life!

Once a man saw in his dream, that a lion was chasing him. The man ran to a tree, climbed on to it and sat on a branch. He looked down and saw that the lion was still there waiting for him. The man then looked to his side where the branch he was sitting on was attached to the tree and saw that two rats were circling around and eating the branch. One rat was black and the other one was white. The branch would fall on the ground very soon. The man then looked below again with fear and discovered that a big black snake had come and settled directly under him. The snake opened its mouth right under the man so that he will fall into it. The man then looked up to see if there was anything that he could hold on to. He saw another branch with a honeycomb. Drops of honey were falling from it. The man wanted to taste the honey. He drank one drop. The honey was very sweet in taste. So, he wanted to taste another drop, then another and then another. As a result, he got lost into the sweetness of the honey. Meanwhile, he forgot about the two rats eating his branch away, the lion on the ground and the snake that is sitting right under him. After a while, he woke up from his sleep.

To get the meaning behind this dream, the man went to a pious scholar. The scholar said 'The lion you saw is your death. It always chases you and goes where ever you go. The two rats, one black and one white, are the night and the day. Black one is the night and the white one is the day. They circle around, coming one after another, to eat your time as they take you closer to death. The big black snake with a dark mouth is your grave. It's there, just waiting for you to fall into it. The honeycomb is this world and the sweet honey is the luxuries of this world. We like to taste a drop of the luxuries of this world and it's very sweet. Then we taste another drop and then another. Meanwhile, we get lost into this world and forget about our time, our death and our graves.'

May Allah wake us up from the sleep and save us before it's too late.

Why She Won't Wear Hijab

A convesation for Muslim sisters:

"I'm so tired."

"Tired of what?"

"Of all these people judging me."

"Who judged you?"

"Like that woman, every time I sit with her, she tells me to wear hijab."

"Oh, hijab and music! The mother of all topics!"

"Yeah! I listen to music without hijab…haha!"

"Maybe she was just giving you advice."

"I don't need her advice. I know my religion. Can`t she mind her own
business?"

"Maybe you misunderstood. She was just being nice."

"Keeping out of my business, that would be nice..."

"But it's her duty to encourage you do to good."

"Trust me. That was no encouragement. And what do you mean `good` ?"

"Well, wearing hijab, that would be a good thing to do."

"Says who?"

"It's in the Qur'an, isn't it?"

"Yes. She did quote me something."

"She said Surah Nur, and other places of the Qur'an."

"Yes, but it's not a big sin anyway. Helping people and praying is more
important."

"True. But big things start with small things."

"That's a good point, but what you wear is not important. What's important
is to have a good healthy heart."

"What you wear is not important?"

"That's what I said."

"Then why do you spend an hour every morning fixing up?"

"What do you mean?"

"You spend money on cosmetics, not to mention all the time you spend on
fixing your hair and low-carb dieting."

"So?"

"So, your appearance IS important."

"No. I said wearing hijab is not an important thing in religion."

"If it's not an important thing in religion, why is it mentioned in the Holy
Qur'an?"

"You know I can't follow all that's in Qur'an."

"You mean God tells you something to do, you disobey and then it's OK?"

"Yes. God is forgiving."

"God is forgiving to those who repent and do not repeat their mistakes."

"Says who?"

"Says the same book that tells you to cover."

"But I don't like hijab, it limits my freedom."

"But the lotions, lipsticks, mascara and other cosmetics set you free?!
What`s your definition of freedom anyway?"

"Freedom is in doing whatever you like to do."

"No. Freedom is in doing the right thing, not in doing whatever we wish to do."

"Look! I've seen so many people who don't wear hijab and are nice people, and so many who wear hijab and are bad people."

"So what? There are people who are nice to you but are alcoholic. Should we all be alcoholics? You made a stupid point."

"I don't want to be an extremist or a fanatic. I'm OK the way I am without hijab."

"Then you are a secular fanatic. An extremist in disobeying God."

"You don't get it, if I wear hijab, who would marry me?!"

"So all these people with hijab never get married?!"

"Okay! What if I get married and my husband doesn't like it? And wants me to remove it?"

"What if your husband wants you to go out with him on a bank robbery?!"

"That's irrelevant, bank robbery is a crime."

"Disobeying your Creator is not a crime?"

"But then who would hire me?"

"A company that respects people for who they are."

"Not after 9-11"

"Yes. After 9-11. Don't you know about Hanan who just got into med school?
And the other one, what was her name, the girl who always wore a white hijab…ummm…"

"Yasmeen?"

"Yes. Yasmeen. She just finished her MBA and is now interning for GE."

"Why do you reduce religion to a piece of cloth anyway?"

"Why do you reduce womanhood to high heals and lipstick colors?"

"You didn't answer my question."

"In fact, I did. Hijab is not just a piece of cloth. It is obeying God in a difficult environment. It is courage, faith in action, and true womanhood.
But your short sleeves, tight pants…"

"That's called `fashion`, you live in a cave or
something? First of all, hijab was founded by men who wanted to control
women."

"Really? I did not know men could control women by hijab."

"Yes. That's what it is."

"What about the women who fight their husbands to wear hijab? And women in France who are forced to remove their hijab by men? What do you say about that?"

"Well, that's different."

"What difference? The woman who asked you to wear hijab…she was a woman, right?"

"Right, but…"

"But fashions that are designed and promoted by male-dominated corporations, set you free? Men have no control on exposing women and using them as a commodity?! Give me a break!"

"Wait, let me finish, I was saying…"

"Saying what? You think that men control women by hijab?"

"Yes."

"Specifically how?"

"By telling women how and what to wear, dummy!"

"Doesn't TV, magazines and movies tell you what to wear, and how to be `attractive'?"

"Of course, it's fashion."

"Isn't that control? Pressuring you to wear what they want you to wear?"

[Silence]

"Not just controlling you, but also controlling the market."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, you are told to look skinny and anorexic like that woman on the cover of the magazine, by men who design those magazines and sell those products."

"I don't get it. What does hijab have to do with products."

"It has everything to do with that. Don't you see? Hijab is a threat to consumerism, women who spend billions of dollars to look skinny and live by standards of fashion designed by men…and then here is Islam, saying trash all that nonsense and focus on your soul, not on your looks, and do not worry what men think of your looks."

"Like I don't have to buy hijab? Isn't hijab a product?"

"Yes, it is. It is a product that sets you free from male-dominated consumerism."

"Stop lecturing me! I WILL NOT WEAR HIJAB!
It is awkward, outdated, and totally not suitable for this society ... Moreover, I am only 20 and too young to wear hijab!"

"Fine. Say that to your Lord, when you face Him on Judgment Day."

"Fine."

"Fine."

[Silence]

"Shut up and I don't want to hear more about hijab niqab schmijab Punjab!"

[Silence]

She stared at the mirror, tired of arguing with herself all this time.

Successful enough, she managed to shut the voices in her head, with her own opinions triumphant in victory on the matter, and a final modern decision accepted by the society - but rejected by the Faith:

"Yes!" - to curls on the hair - "No!" - to hijab!

"And he (/she) is indeed a failure who corrupts it [the soul]!"
[Holy Quran 91:10]

Subhana'Allah!!!

"Nay! You prefer the life of this world; While the hereafter is better and more lasting."
[Holy Quran: 87:16-17]

"You are the best community (Ummah) raised up for (the benefit of) humanity; enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong and believing in Allah."
[Holy Quran: 3:110]
